As I’ve mentioned before in this blog, I love the state of Virginia. I have so many fond memories of family vacations spent there tubing down the Shenandoah River, hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains, exploring all the caves, swimming at Virginia Beach and relaxing in Cape Charles. Thrift shopping in Staunton, seeing the wild ponies at Chincoteague, and riding all the thrill rides at Busch Gardens are additional highlights that come to mind. When my son bought a cottage in Southwestern Virginia, a whole new part of the gorgeous state was opened up to us. The nearest larger town to his is Galax, and what a charming place it is with its antique shops, music venues and parks. The New River is there for tubing and kayaking, and the surrounding lush, green countryside is amazing for hiking and biking. It’s considered one of the Best Small Towns to Visit in America by Country Living, and here’s what OnlyInYour State.com has to say about it, “Called the Gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains, Galax has long been a haven for old time music lovers. Since 1935, this beautiful little town of 7,000 has hosted the Old Fiddler’s Convention, one of the most prestigious competitions for traditional music in the country. With attractions like the The Blue Ridge Music Center located nearby, this area continues the rich tradition of mountain music unique to Appalachia. Surrounded by stunning natural beauty, Galax offers an historic downtown that combines traditional mountain charm with quaint shops and restaurants. Come for the music, come for the culture or just come to enjoy an authentic down-home good time.”
I’ve been looking in this area for quite a while for a well-built house under $50,000, and this brick bungalow is a good place to start. Plenty of sunlight, a fireplace, French doors and a spacious kitchen are highlighted features of this 4-bedroom, 2.5-bath home. It sits on a pleasant street with a .25 acre yard. In walking distance to historic downtown and with mountains in the background, the neighborhood and house is a deal at $42,000.
