Circa 1900 $20,000 Victorian Fixer Upper
This old house under $50,000 in Seymour, Indiana, hometown of John Mellencamp, is actually just $20,000. It’s not a “little pink house for you and me,” but more like a large 3,200-square foot Victorian fixer upper for you folks looking to restore a piece of history.
My husband and I drove through Seymour on our cross-country trek from New Jersey to California. We found it to be a pleasant town with some lovely older homes. I wouldn’t call this circa 1900 Victorian lovely at this point, but it sure has the potential to be quite a charmer. I adore the multi-faceted gables, dragonskin shingles, gingerbread and two-story bay. The wrap-around porch will be a great feature once the spindly colonial posts are removed and more period columns are installed. (Someone tried to go cheap here and it just doesn’t work. It’s almost as bad as that faux-wood paneling you find in so many of these old houses under $50,000.) Although this 4-bedroom, 2.5-bath three-story has seen better days, consider the front door with transom, fantastic staircase, original lighting fixtures and original interior doors and trim. The fireplace mantel, with mirror and tiles, is a real beauty. It’s quite a deal for a Victorian fixer upper with so many of its original details intact.
