20 Academy St, Amsterdam, NY 12010
NY Fixer Upper $35,000
In the 1980s, I lived in Cobleskill, a small town not far from Amsterdam. Amsterdam has been depressed for decades, but the city boasts some great Victorian-era architecture, in particular Academy Street, a street much too important to be abandoned by neglect. While it is not documented, some think that #18 Academy St. might have been a design of George Franklin Barber, one of America’s renowned residential architects of the 19th century. (Two other documented Barber homes are just two blocks away). This 1890 Queen Anne has its issues, but as you can see from the photos, many of its key architectural elements are still intact. I originally posted this beauty in August 2017, when it was priced at $25,000. I assume the seller has put money into fixing the roof since then. The home’s potential is enormous, but you’ll have to consider if it’s worth the additional $10,000.
