Illinois Fixer Upper Under $15,000

On a tree-lined street of small, older homes in the West Central neighborhood of Peoria, I am wondering if this circa 1920 bungalow could be a Sears Catalog Kit house. I’m not sure. What I am sure of is that the house seems to have had little “improvements” over the last hundred years. Original doors and trim, hardwood floors, six-over-one windows and bathroom fixtures, including the medicine cabinet (look at the hardware), are all original. I especially love the floor-to-ceiling kitchen cupboards.

As per the realtor. “This Cape Cod home is in need of some refreshing. It has covered porch, woodwork, and floor features that once were gorgeous. The home still has great bones. With some work this 2 bedroom 1 bathroom home may be someone’s dream home. You have approximately 1254 square feet of living space to manipulate into a more functional space. Bring your design ideas to make this home more beautiful than before.”

“About two dozen of Sears most popular house designs had a unique column arrangement on the front porch (see photo). Five-piece eave brackets (the diagonal support brace between the roof line and the exterior wall) might also be a sign that you have a Sears Home.” As per The Arts & Crafts Society.

The above is a photo of the unique column arrangement found on some Sears Catalog Kit homes. What do you think? Could 915 W. Gift Avenue be a Sears home?
