23 N. Genesee St, Geneva, NY
This grand 1880 Victorian has been priced low to allow for restoration costs. Located in Geneva, NY, the home is in walking distance to Lake Geneva and lies just north of the Genesee Park Historic District. Why the north end of the street was not included in the district I don’t know. Plenty of wonderful old homes with original features are situated there, and this 5-bedroom, 1.5-bath dwelling is one of them. What a great house for the money!
Geneva is one of my favorite small towns to visit. Our family would often stop here on our way from New Jersey to Rochester Institute of Technology, my youngest son’s alma mater. We’d stroll along the lake’s promenade and watch the pleasure boats go by, grab a chocolate milkshake at the concession stand there (one of the best chocolate shakes in New York State), and peruse the large antique store across the way. Of course, a drive through the town’s two historic districts and surrounding area was a must for us old house lovers. There are some real beauties in Geneva. Number 23 N. North Genesee Street counts among them.
Exquisite craftsmanship meets you at every turn. First off, it boasts one of the largest stained glass windows in town. Additional stained glass windows are found throughout the house, as are French doors, hardwood floors, pocket doors and mosaic tiled fireplace mantels. The staircase is stunning, and the detailed interior doors and trim are original. Of course, the dropped ceilings have to go, and the kitchen needs work, but all that is neither here nor there, as far as I’m concerned, when you feast your eyes on the butler’s pantry. Just look at that piece of art! Glass front cupboard doors, original hardware and a copper sink!! Add all that to cast iron radiators, original lighting fixtures and bay windows for just a few of the features you’ll never find in a newer home. I’d try to get that wonderful stove included in the deal, too. The $44,900 listing point is priced low to allow for restorations to be made. An FHA 203K mortgage could even incorporate the repair costs. Google map the street of large older residences, and you’ll not only fall in love with this amazing home but the neighborhood as well.
