129 Church St., Sharon Springs, NY 13459
In the early 1980s, our family lived in the next town over from this historic spa town. At that time most of the old hotels were abandoned and it made an interesting place to take the kids on a Sunday afternoon. We’d picnic on the grounds of one of the hotels overlooking the valley, peer in the windows of the spa and hold our noses at Magnesia Temple. We almost bought a huge old home on the edge of downtown, right before the curvy hill that leads to Route 20. I hear that some of the buildings have been rehabbed now.
This circa 1831 Sharon Springs, NY, cottage is adorable. Actually, it’s nestled in a nearby hamlet called Argusville, a tiny place we’d take Sunday drives through. Although it only has one bedroom and one bathroom, the home is rather spacious. Note the eyebrow windows and front porch. Original doors and trim, a lovely staircase, French doors, wide plank floors, pleasant wood-paneled kitchen and updated bath are great features. For me the two highlights are, of course the price, and that amazing, cast iron stove! The columned room dividers, book shelves and wainscoting are nothing to sneeze at, too. It’s a bank-owned foreclosure.
