I’ll be concentrating on vacation homes this week. The debate over what is more beautiful – the mountains or the beach is a long standing one. I grew up on Long Island, NY, where we lived just down the block from the Great South Bay. My family had several boats over the years, and on summer weekends we’d travel over to Fire Island. It was glorious! After my husband and I married, we bought a house in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. We lived on top of a hill with stunning views in three directions. The beach called me, however, and we relocated to the Jersey Shore, where we raised our family for 20+ years. We lived a bike ride to the Delaware Bay and an 8-minute car ride to Stone Harbor beaches. Now in Huntington Beach, CA, I don’t have to choose between beach and mountains. The ocean is a bike ride away and we have views of the mountains from our condo!
If beaches call your name, then this circa 1947 cottage might be up your alley. It’s a wonderful fixer upper on 2.37 acres on Goose Creek Island. Just think – an island getaway with three bedrooms in a small community on the Pamlico Sound, a beautiful body of water noted for its fishing and duck hunting. This house needs some fixing, but think of the possibilities. You can rescreen the front porch and watch the fireflies and wildlife. The quaint and cozy interior features beadboard walls and ceilings, hardwood floors and sunlit rooms. Myself – I’d leave the charming kitchen just the way it is. It’s perfect for a weekend beach cottage.
