100-Year Old Home Spared From Demolition To Be Moved For A Family Who Lost Their Home In LA Wildfires

A historic four-bedroom home measuring 2,300 square feet and originally built in 1926 on N. Orlando Avenue in West Hollywood has been spared from demolition. Instead, it will be carefully dismantled and relocated to Altadena, where it will be rebuilt on the site of the Martinez family’s home that was destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires. The house, purchased for just $1, is currently being sectioned off for transport, with the move scheduled for next week. Even after factoring in relocation and reconstruction costs, the total expense is estimated to be about 25% lower than the price of constructing a brand-new home.

The West Hollywood property previously belonged to a 98-year-old woman who lived there until her passing in December. She raised eight children in that house. The vacant site will now be redeveloped, with plans calling for up to six new homes.

This effort is part of the Historic House Relocation Project and Omgiving, a program designed to preserve homes that would otherwise end up in landfills while helping families in fire-ravaged communities rebuild more quickly and affordably than through traditional construction methods.
