History

  • Unique Design:

Unlike most motorhomes built on chassis supplied by other manufacturers, GMC designed, engineered, and built the entire vehicle, including the body and, in most cases, the interiors, in-house.

  • Front-Wheel Drive:

The GMC Motorhome featured a front-wheel drive system, a design that allowed for a low profile and low center of gravity, which improved handling and ride quality.

  • Toronado Powertrain:

The motorhome utilized the Olds Toronado’s front-wheel drive, 455 cu. in. engine, 425 Hydromatic transmission, and 3.07 differential, designed for trailer towing.

  • Production and Demise:

GMC produced nearly 13,000 motorhomes (specifically 12,921) between 1973 and 1978. Production ended in 1978 after GM ceased building the Toronado and its large-block drivetrain, which was a critical component of the GMC Motorhome.

  • Legacy:

The GMC Motorhome is still considered a revolutionary vehicle that redefined the RV industry, and many of the 12,921 produced are still in use.

  • Glendive Model:
The Glendive model, a specific interior theme, was one of the many exterior and interior decorating themes offered, with names including Palm Beach, Eleganza, and Canyonlands.
