Family History

From the 1940s to the 1970s, George and Mary Hartman  lived in this home with their sons Roland and Gerald. George had a college degree and worked for the government. Mary taught a kindergarten class in the home.  During the 1970s, the house was a gathering place for Mary’s many friends from the Linton Civic Garden Club. George had passed in 1948, but Mary continued to live in the home. She often held breakfasts for Garden Club in the home of which she was so proud. Back then it had an amazing garden, and inside the pocket doors, hardwood floors and staircase were unpainted and in prime condition.

Pros

  • Very affordable housing. The Census puts the median owner-occupied home value around $86,000 and median gross rent around $812/month, dramatically below national housing costs.
  • Quiet, small-town atmosphere. Linton has only about 5,245 residents, so it has a much slower pace than Terre Haute, Indianapolis, or other larger cities.
  • Strong sense of community. Local reviews frequently mention neighbors knowing each other, community events, and a family-oriented atmosphere.
  • Outdoor recreation is a real strength. Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area Visitor Center is nearby, and Humphrey’s Park provides a major local recreation hub.
  • Schools are reasonably well regarded. Niche gives Linton a B- for public schools and describes the schools as above average overall.
  • Crime isn’t a major drawback by comparison. Niche gives Linton a B for crime & safety, with several categories below national rates.
  • You can get most basic necessities locally. There are grocery/retail options, restaurants, a cinema, library, medical/dental services, etc., without having to leave town for every errand.
  • Good place for retirees or families who like quiet. Nearly 20% of residents are 65+, and Niche ranks Linton among Indiana’s better places to retire.

Cons

  • The job market is the biggest weakness. Niche gives Linton a C- for jobs, and the median household income is only about $45,440.
  • Limited entertainment. If you want lots of restaurants, shopping, nightlife, concerts, or cultural activities, Linton can feel pretty limited. Local residents specifically mention wanting more dining and entertainment options.
  • You’ll probably want a car. Public transportation is limited, and many jobs/services outside town require driving.
  • Small-town amenities come with tradeoffs. There isn’t the same depth of healthcare, shopping, specialized services, or employment opportunities you’d get in a larger metro.
  • Lower incomes and poverty are significant issues. Census data shows 17.3% of residents below the poverty line, which helps explain some of the economic challenges.
  • Demographically, it’s not very diverse. Census data reports roughly 95% White alone and only about 1% foreign-born.
  • Young adults may find it boring. The combination of a small population, limited nightlife, and fewer career opportunities can make it harder to build a social/professional network.
