5 Abandoned Houses Under $50K Begging to Be Restored

For many of us, abandoned houses have a mysterious and haunting beauty. Their weathered clapboards, broken shutters and peeling paint seem to beckon us to peer through their windows.  I wish I could wave a magic wand and make these abandoned places shine again. Here are a few abandoned houses (and by that we mean vacated and confiscated by the city) that are currently on the market for under $50K.

This Colonial Revival was the much-loved home of  Jeremiah Ryan and his family from the 1920s to the 1960s. Jeremiah, a maintenance mechanic for Syracuse City Fire Dept., resided here with his wife Catherine and daughters Mary and Joan. In fact, the Ryans held an engagement cocktail party for Mary in their proud home in 1949. They must be turning over in their graves to see it now.

This Queen Anne with rusticated block tower sits in the Metcalfe Park neighborhood of Milwaukee. Residents who built homes here, in what was named the Metcalfe Park neighborhood in 1990, could walk to work at the many local industries that arrived between 1890 and 1910.  Many others, mostly of German ancestry,  founded small businesses, particularly on North Avenue. Although I could not pinpoint the owners of this home, I think it likely that a German shop owner built it. It almost looks like a mini German castle, doesn’t it?

Vita Paradiso was born in Italy, came to Syracuse in 1912, and lived in this home when it was the belle of Ash Street. Imbricated shingles in the double front gables, double bay windows, beautiful staircase, built-in floor-to-ceiling kitchen cupboards and gorgeous tin ceilings were only a few of the original elements that attracted Vita to this home.

This brick Victorian cottage looks forlorn now, but it was once the darling residence of Mrs. Laura Hughes who passed away in her home in 1951. I am sure Laura enjoyed having her three children, 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandkids come visit her here. The cottage much yearn for a family to love it again.

This home is located in Toledo’s Old West End neighborhood. Twenty-five city blocks comprise one of the most extensive collections of late Victorian houses left standing in the US. Frank Lloyd Wright even studied this neighborhood in his planning of his Oak Park Project in Illinois. Imagine this home as it once was, then take it back to its glory days again.
