Family History

The store and house was owned by Charles Bader (1869-1943). He married his wife, Mary, a German immigrant, in 1893 and soon purchased the featured property right before 1900.. The couple lived in the home with their children, Mamie, Laura, Charles, Elwin, Harry and Olga, as well a s a boarder. All helped run the store which started out as a general store, mainly selling groceries.

Kennan was officially platted in the late 19th century during a period of significant growth in northern Wisconsin. Like much of northern Wisconsin, Kennan’s early economy was heavily influenced by the logging industry. The dense forests provided ample timber, which was harvested and transported via rivers and, later, railroads.

The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century was a critical development for Kennan. It facilitated the transport of timber and other goods, boosting the local economy and leading to increased settlement.

As the logging industry began to decline in the early 20th century, agriculture became increasingly important to Kennan’s economy. The fertile soil of the region supported dairy farming, crop production, and other agricultural activities.

The village developed around its agricultural base, with local businesses and services catering to the needs of farmers and their families, and all continued well with Bader General Store until the mid 20th-century.

The mid-20th century saw continued agricultural activity, but like many rural areas, Kennan faced economic challenges, including population decline and the consolidation of farms. After CHarles passed away in 1943, the store was less profitable. Several years later, the oldest son, Charles, then took over the business, converting the general store into a sporting goods store. With the town’s current population of only 130 residents, the business failed.
