Family History

This was originally the home of  Dr. Clemens Gillihan (1822-1899) and his second wife, Eliza Rebecca Taylor Gillihan (1841-1919), an immigrant from Ireland.  Clemens’ parents both died when he was 12 years old, and he then worked on a farm until the age of 20. After a few months traveling, he began studying medicine. While he took a course or two, it does not appear that he had a college degree in medicine. Back then, I guess it was common just to hand out a sign. Anyway, as a doctor he amassed property in southwest Missouri. With his Union sentiments during the Civil War, however, he felt compelled to leave that area and lost his holdings.
In 1861 he married Eliza and had one son, Mark. There he practiced medicine and established the Gillihan & Cowan Drug Store. After his death in 1899, Eliza lived in this home with son Mark, his wife Minnie, grandchildren, Opal and Arthur, and a niece and nephew. By 1910, however, Eliza was the only person living in the home. She died in 1919 at the age of 77.
