c.1880 Six Bedroom New York Victorian Home For Sale Under $150K
$149,900
This New York Victorianย home for sale with six bedrooms, two bathrooms, may be in need of help, but it is a gem. Hardwood floors, original lighting fixtures, built-ins, unpainted woodwork, French doors, fireplace, clawfoot tub and a wonderful curved staircase are highlights.
My mom and sisters lived in this village, so Iย know it well. Unfortunately, the village has been dealing with water contamination from perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from a local business for almost a decade, which caused high cancer rates. They say it has been treated, but it is best to use bottled water for cooking.

Family History
This was the home of one of the oldest residents of Hoosick Falls at the time of her death. Mary Morrissey was 102 years old when she passed away in her home in 1978. She had lived there for at least five decades. Her husband, Thomas Morrissey, was a farmer who pre-deceased her. The couple had no children. Makes you wonder how the widow Morrissey could handle such a large house on her own. She certainly didn’t climb those stairs at 102.

Location of This New York Victorian Home For Sale
Hoosick Falls, New York, is a small village in Rensselaer County with a population of around 3,300. Itโs known for its historical charm and location near the Vermont border. Here are some pros and cons of living in Hoosick Falls:
Pros:
- Historic Charm: Hoosick Falls has a rich history, with many well-preserved historical buildings and a classic small-town New England feel. The village offers a quaint, scenic environment for those who enjoy historic architecture.
- Affordability: The cost of living, particularly housing, is more affordable compared to larger cities in New York State, making it appealing to people looking for a more budget-friendly place to live.
- Proximity to Nature: The village is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is close to various outdoor recreational areas, including the Green Mountains of Vermont. Hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities are easily accessible.
- Close-Knit Community: Hoosick Falls offers a strong sense of community, where people tend to know their neighbors. Local events and festivals, like the Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza, foster community engagement and connection.
- Proximity to Larger Towns: Though small, Hoosick Falls is close to larger towns and cities like Troy and Albany, offering more amenities, shopping, and employment opportunities within a reasonable driving distance.
Cons:
- Limited Employment Opportunities: Like many small towns, Hoosick Falls has limited job opportunities, especially in specialized fields. Many residents commute to nearby cities for work.
- Environmental Concerns: The village gained national attention due to water contamination issues involving PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) a few years ago. While the water has since been treated and measures have been taken to ensure safety, the history of contamination has left lingering concerns for some residents.
- Limited Amenities and Services: While the village has basic services, it lacks the variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options found in larger cities. For more extensive services, residents need to travel to nearby urban areas.
- Weather: Hoosick Falls experiences cold, snowy winters, which can be challenging for those not used to long winters and heavy snowfalls.
- Declining Population and Economy: Like many rural towns in New York, Hoosick Falls has seen a decline in population and economic challenges over the years, which can impact local businesses and overall investment in the area.
In summary, Hoosick Falls offers a charming, affordable small-town experience with access to nature and community spirit, but it also faces challenges related to job opportunities, amenities, and past environmental issues.
