History
In 1989, this home was given new life by the West North Street Foundation, a Habitat For Humanity type organization. They removed dropped ceilings and false walls that had divided the home into four apartments. They painted the exterior pink, too, and the home was know as the “Pretty in Pink HOuse” for years. The foundation sold the house in 1991 to Vernon and MayBalanz who continued to work on the house along with family members.
Formerly it was owned by Robert E. and Lillian Pound. Robert was a former assistant police chief who resigned in 1931.

I househunted in Decatur in 2019. The town is a treasure trove of beautiful, inexpensive old houses. It’s a college town with a beautiful campus and a quaint downtown. East Decatur is also a historical district, but West has more affordable fixer uppers. Decatur has lost some major industries in the past decades and has economic challenges. My impression in 2019 was that the West side had a stagnant feel to it — hard to explain. I just felt I could get stuck there, that lots of people were stuck there. Now, in 2025, I think I might have judged too harshly. I would definitely encourage a friend to consider Decatur and if I was contemplating a househunt and move today, I would revisit the town. The streets are wide, the neighborhoods pretty, and the terrain is flat (great for bike riding.)
