Family History
This was the home of Dr. Martha Eckford (1882-1938). Dr. Eckford was a bacteriologist and teacher from 1907-1938 at the Mississippi University of Women. In fact, a building at the university was named after her.She earned her MA at Columbia University in 1913, created the department of Bacteriology and Hygiene as MSCW, and earned a PhD from John Hopkins in 1934.
She lived in the home with her mother and three adult daughters, Gertrude, Mary and Eugenia, who all were teachers.
