Family History
From 1907, it was the home of James Reed Williams (1881-1933), a proprietor of a transfer company, and his wife Bertha Langan (1884-1960). The couple married in 1906 and purchased this house a year later. They had no children. By 1920, the couple was renting a house in Flagler, Florida, and James was a truck farmer.

Pros
• Low Cost of Living
Housing, groceries, utilities, and overall expenses are substantially lower than Illinois and U.S. averages—24%–30% less overall. Median home values range from $72K–$90K, and median rent is around $700–780/month
• Affordable Housing & Ownership Rates
Median home price around $88K, with ~62% homeownership—possibly enabling strong value for buyers seeking space and affordability
• Overall Safety & Low Crime Compared to State
Streator’s violent crime rate (~192 per 100k) sits ~50%–55% below state and national averages. Property crime is also notably lower than Illinois average. That said, some sources suggest crime may be average compared to towns of similar size
• Small-Town Charm & Community Activity
Despite its size, Streator offers community events like food truck festivals, Park Fest, Roamer Cruise Night, and regular live performances at local venues. A historic Carnegie library and downtown murals add cultural flavor
• Proximity to Nature & Outdoor Recreation
The city includes several parks, a golf course, river access for boating, and is less than 25 miles from the popular Starved Rock State Park for hiking, waterfalls, and canyons
Cons
• Weak Employment & Economic Prospects
Median household income (~$40K–$46K) is well below state and national levels. Poverty rates hover around ~19%–22%, and unemployment is above average. Local job opportunities are limited, with residents often commuting to surrounding towns
• School Performance Concerns
Public schools are rated fairly low: elementary schools with C/C+ grades and high schools at B–. Math and reading proficiency are notably below state averages. Graduation rates (~79%) also trail state metrics
• Limited Amenities & Transportation
Most shopping, dining, and basic services require driving; public transit is nearly non-existent. Few sidewalks and limited walkability beyond central areas can feel isolating for those without a vehicle
• Population Decline & Economic Stagnation
The population has dipped ~1% since 2010, and there’s a sense of stagnation tied to the decline of once-prominent glass and coal industries. Many long-time residents cite outmigration due to lack of jobs or amenities
• Some Resident Criticism on Vibe & Social Issues
Reddit commentary includes frustration over limited opportunities, perceived drug issues, and an overall “dead‑end” feeling for the town. Some individuals describe a social or cultural lock-in among long-standing residents
