Pros of Living in Kewanee, IL

  1. Low Cost of Living

    • According to Areavibes, Kewanee’s cost of living is about 18% below the Illinois average and 21% below the national average.

    • Housing is especially cheap: HomeSnacks reports a housing index of 43 (well below national baseline), a median home value around $77,455, and median rent of $775.

    • According to best-neighborhood data, many of the most affordable neighborhoods in Kewanee have median home values around $64,780.

  2. Small-Town / Community Feel

    • Kewanee is a relatively small city (population ~12,500 per the 2020 Census).

    • Its size means people may know each other more easily, and there’s more potential for civic involvement. The city’s own economic-development planning highlights that community engagement is more feasible in a smaller city

    • There are local traditions and character: for example, Kewanee is nicknamed the “Hog Capital of the World.”

    • There are parks and green spaces: according to the city profile, Kewanee has several parks.

    • Historic architecture: There’s the Frederick Francis Woodland Palace, a very cool historic house.

  3. Education Options

    • Kewanee has two school districts (Kewanee CUSD 229 and Wethersfield CUSD 230) serving different parts of the city.

    • As per Homes.com, Kewanee High School offers Career & Technical Education (CTE) courses, which can be valuable for students not necessarily planning to go to a 4-year college.

    • The city has a community college presence: Black Hawk College has an “East Campus” in Kewanee.

  4. Affordable Land & Redevelopment Potential

    • According to the city’s economic development plan, Kewanee has available land for development and infill, which could be an advantage for people wanting to build or invest.

    • The plan also notes that housing and land are relatively cheap compared to more urban/suburban areas.

  5. Transportation Access

    • Kewanee has an Amtrak station, giving residents a rail option.

    • Because of its small size, commuting within the city is relatively easy, and average commute times are modest (Data USA reports ~18.5 minutes average).

  6. Affordability of Infrastructure

    • In their cost-of-living breakdown, HomeSnacks shows that utilities are somewhat cheaper (index 88) in Kewanee than U.S. average, which helps reduce monthly expenses.

Cons / Challenges of Living in Kewanee, IL

  1. Crime / Safety Concerns

    • According to HomeSnacks, the overall crime rate in Kewanee is 62.16% above the national average (based on crimes per 100,000 people).

    • On Niche, Kewanee’s Crime & Safety rating is C+, meaning crime is a real concern to some residents.

    • According to the city council packet, there is a notable issue with methamphetamine-related crime, which the local police have identified as a growing problem.

    • The cost of crime in Kewanee is not negligible: CrimeGrade.org estimates a per-resident “cost of crime” of $385/year based on lost property, etc.

BUT, note: there is a contradictory crime data source (CrimeExplorer) that gives Kewanee very good grades (A) for both violent and property crime rates.
This suggests crime may vary a lot by how it’s measured and which data source you trust.

  2. Population Decline / Small Size

    • According to Citytistics, Kewanee’s population has declined over 5 years (-2.6% in the last 5 years).

    • A shrinking or stagnant population can limit economic growth, reduce demand for businesses, and make it harder to sustain public services.

  3. Low Median Income / Poverty

    • The city has a relatively high poverty rate: Citytistics reports 17.5% of residents are below the poverty line.

    • Data USA gives a median household income of $49,668, which is well below many urban or suburban areas in Illinois.

    • The economic development plan also notes that Kewanee “has lost a lot of its manufacturing base” and that incomes are lower than comparable cities.

    • According to the city’s infrastructure report, some parts of the water system are old, and there may be lead service line burdens (~30%), which could have public health implications.

  4. High Tax Rates / Fiscal Challenges

    • The economic development plan calls out “high tax rates” as a weakness, noting that Kewanee’s total levy (tax burden) is higher than similar communities.

    • If you’re buying property, even though home prices are low, property taxes and other local levies might offset some of the affordability.

  5. Limited Job Market / Economic Opportunity

    • While there are some jobs in manufacturing, health care, and retail (per Data USA), the loss of some of the industrial base is a long-term concern.

    • For certain professional or high-paying careers, opportunities may be more limited compared to larger metro areas.

  6. Aging Infrastructure

    • As noted, much of Kewanee’s water system is old.

    • Some housing may be older: historic homes are a plus, but older housing stock can also mean more maintenance cost.

  7. Less to Do / Limited Amenities

    • While Kewanee does have parks, a historic district, and community events, as a smaller city it may not offer the breadth of cultural, nightlife, or specialized amenities found in larger cities.

    • According to some comments from Reddit, the social and “young professional” scene is limited:

“Unless you’re involved in Agriculture there isn’t much else to do out that way … make sure you hit up Cerno’s …”

  8. Economic Risk from Population Trends

    • A declining population (or slow growth) could make it harder to attract new businesses or young people, potentially leading to a “stagnation” risk over the long term.

    • Lower tax base and shrinking consumer market could mean fewer investments in infrastructure or public services.

Key Trade-Offs to Consider

  • Affordability vs Opportunity: Kewanee is very affordable, especially in housing — but if you’re looking for rapid career growth, high-paying jobs, or dynamic industry, you might feel constrained.

  • Small-Town Feel vs Amenities: You’ll likely get a close-knit feel and lower cost of living, but fewer entertainment, dining, or cultural options than in a big city.

  • Safety Uncertainty: Crime data is mixed depending on the source. It’s worth digging into neighborhood-level crime statistics.

  • Long-Term Viability: With declining population and aging infrastructure, consider whether the city is investing in its future in a way that aligns with your time horizon.

  • Quality of Life: For someone who values community involvement, local traditions, and quiet life, Kewanee could be very appealing. For someone prioritizing upward mobility or “big city” amenities, it may feel limiting.
