Kansas Craftsman bungalow

Striking c.1920 Kansas Craftsman Bungalow Loaded With Original Elements $150K

$150,000

c.1920 Kansas Craftsman bungalow feels like a warm handshake from another era—honest, grounded, and quietly beautiful in all the right ways.

From the street, it greets you with a low, welcoming profile and a deep, sheltering front porch—supported by sturdy, tapered columns.

Step inside, and the original elements tell the story best. Rich, honey-toned woodwork frames the space: thick baseboards, window and door casings.  A fireplace is the heart of the home, clad in brick.

Look closer and you’ll notice details that feel almost handmade:

  • Stained glasswindow catching the light
  • Original double-hung windows
  • French doors
  • Vintage lighting fixtures
  • Gleaming hardwood floors

What makes a 1920 Craftsman especially engaging is its authenticity. It doesn’t try to impress with size or trendiness; instead, it draws you in with texture, proportion, and human-scale comfort. Every detail—from the joinery in the woodwork to the placement of a built-in—reflects a time when homes were designed to be lived in slowly and thoughtfully.

It’s not just a house—it’s a piece of living craftsmanship, where nearly every original feature feels like it was made with care, meant to last, and meant to be noticed.

History

The house is actually pictured on the 1917 Sanborn born. The original owner was Chester A. Jury, a wholesale grocer.  He lived here with his wife Anna, and daughters Frances and Marguerite from the 1910s through the 1930s.  As a child, Frances was an accomplished pianist. I wonder if that was her piano in the house? By 1940, the house was the Dean’s residence for the teachers college.

Gosh, that’s pretty. The lighting fixtures! The wallpaper border in the room with the piano looks original to the house and the border in the kitchen, if not original, was well chosen to be appropriate with the house’s era. The exterior kind of looks like the storybook style of Arts and Crafts. Just so pretty. And Frances was a stunner, too.
