Family History

John Bond Atkinson was the original owner of this home. He was born on November 11, 1840, in Mullica Hill, Gloucester County, New Jersey. He was the son of George Tatum Atkinson (1810–1895) and Elizabeth Townsend Bond (1814–1895).

On April 4, 1867, he and Sarah Ann Black (1840–1900) recorded their intention to marry at the Mount Holly Monthly Meeting, part of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. They had two known children.

Atkinson worked as a civil engineer early in his career, contributing to projects in Boston Harbor and the Hoosac Tunnel. He later became head of the St. Bernard Mining Company and was an early developer of the coal fields in western Kentucky. During his time there, he also established a tree nursery on company land to help restore forests in areas affected by mining.
