Pros
- Small-town pace: usually less traffic and a more community-centered lifestyle.
- More affordable housing than nearby larger metros.
- Close to larger cities for services: you can reach Ottawa and LaSalle/Peru for more shopping, healthcare options, and events, without living in a big city.
- Local parks and outdoor options: good for weekend activities and family recreation.
- Good access to highways/road trips: you’re within driving distance of bigger areas for day trips or longer outings.
- Community familiarity: local schools, churches, and community groups can make it easier to build relationships.
Cons
- Job market may be more limited locally: depending on your industry, you may need to commute to nearby towns or farther.
- Fewer “big city” amenities: dining variety, nightlife, and specialty shopping tend to be less than in larger metro areas.
- Weather: Illinois winters can be harsh, and summers are hot/humid—so seasonal comfort depends on your tolerance.
- Economic fluctuations can hit small cities: smaller places can sometimes have periods of slower growth or business closures.
- Healthcare access for specialists: you may have to travel for certain specialists or advanced services more often than you would in a larger city.
