Pros
- Affordable housing. Home prices are well below the national average, making it possible to buy a larger home or property for less than in many parts of Illinois.
- Low cost of living. Housing, utilities, and many everyday expenses are relatively affordable.
- Historic character. Freeport has attractive older neighborhoods with Victorian and early 20th-century homes, plus a historic downtown.
- Healthcare access. FHN provides a range of healthcare services locally, reducing the need to travel for many routine medical needs.
- Outdoor recreation. Parks, bike trails, golf courses, and the nearby Jane Addams Trail provide opportunities for walking, cycling, and enjoying nature.
- Convenient location. Residents can reach Rockford, Madison, and Chicago for additional jobs, shopping, and entertainment while enjoying a quieter home base.
- Moderate traffic. Daily commutes are generally short and easy compared with larger metropolitan areas.
Cons
- Limited job market. Manufacturing remains important, but there are fewer opportunities in some professional and technology fields than in larger cities.
- Population decline. Like many Rust Belt communities, Freeport has seen a gradual decline in population, which has affected parts of the local economy.
- Property taxes. Illinois is known for relatively high property taxes, and homeowners should factor that into the overall cost of living.
- Cold winters. Winters bring snow, ice, and below-freezing temperatures, while summers can be warm and humid.
- Neighborhood variation. Some areas are well maintained and highly desirable, while others have higher vacancy rates or aging housing stock. Visiting neighborhoods in person is worthwhile before buying.
- Limited nightlife and entertainment. There are local restaurants and community events, but fewer options than in larger cities.
