Pockets of the city experience significant urban blight and safety challenges, while neighborhoods like Old Orchard, Beverly, or the adjacent suburbs (Sylvania, Perrysburg) remain quiet and highly sought-after.

  • Lake Erie Algal Blooms: Every summer, agricultural runoff combined with warm weather triggers massive toxic blue-green algal blooms on the western basin of Lake Erie. While water filtration systems have vastly improved since the city’s infamous 2014 water crisis, the blooms still routinely restrict swimming, boating, and beach access during peak summer months.

  • Drab Winters & Overcast Skies: Located in Northwest Ohio, Toledo experiences long, grey, and cold winters.
