History

By the 1920s, Helvetia still operated several small rural school districts. Many Wisconsin communities were replacing nineteenth-century wooden one-room schools with larger brick buildings that met new state standards for lighting, heating, sanitation, and graded instruction. The Helvetia district followed this statewide trend by erecting a modern brick school in 1927. The building replaced older facilities that had become inadequate for the area’s educational needs. Like hundreds of rural Wisconsin schools, the Helvetia school eventually closed during the school consolidation movement of the 1950s and 1960s, when students were transported to larger districts such as Iola-Scandinavia. Many former rural school buildings were then converted to community halls, private residences, or storage buildings.
