Pros of Kane, IL
- Extremely quiet. If you want peace, low traffic, open land and a genuinely rural lifestyle, Kane checks that box.
- Very small-town community. The local scale is tiny enough that community institutions such as the American Legion and village organizations are important social hubs. American Legion
- Low housing costs. Kane and the surrounding Greene County area are considerably cheaper than Illinois’ larger metro areas. You’re unlikely to encounter the housing prices associated with the Chicago suburbs.
- Good access to farmland and nature. This is agricultural western/central Illinois, so there’s plenty of open countryside and outdoor space.
- Low traffic and short local trips. You aren’t dealing with congestion or suburban sprawl.
- Close to larger small towns. Jerseyville and Carrollton provide substantially more shopping, restaurants, healthcare and services than Kane itself.
- A few useful local businesses/services. Kane has a village water department, laundromat, salon and other small businesses, so it isn’t literally just houses and cornfields. Kane Laundry
- Community atmosphere. For someone who likes knowing their neighbors and being part of a small community, this could be a major positive.
- Rural Illinois location without being extremely remote. You’re within the broader St. Louis/Alton region, so major-city amenities aren’t days awayโjust not particularly close.
Cons of Kane
- It’s really small. With fewer than 300 residents, you should expect very limited local services. This is much more rural than Olean or Elmira, and even considerably smaller than Dawson Springs.
- Limited shopping and restaurants. You’re going to be driving to Jerseyville, Carrollton, Alton or elsewhere for many everyday needs. Even something as basic as a larger grocery trip may require getting in the car.
- Healthcare requires travel. There’s no major hospital in Kane. For anything beyond routine care, you’ll likely be traveling to a larger community.
- Very limited employment. Unless you work in agriculture, a local small business, construction, trades, or remotely, your employment options are likely to involve commuting.
- Car dependency is essentially total. This isn’t a place where you can realistically live without a vehicle.
- Not much nightlife or entertainment. If your idea of entertainment is concerts, theaters, extensive restaurant choices, bars, shopping, etc., you’ll be driving.
- Young adults may find it especially limiting. A tiny population means fewer peers, fewer social opportunities and little dating/nightlife scene.
- Economic growth is limited. Greene County’s population was about 29,900 in 2025, down from more than 33,400 in 2010.
- Services/infrastructure can be thin. Small municipalities don’t have the resources of larger cities. The existence of a small village water department is useful, but it’s also a reminder of how limited the municipal infrastructure is. Kane Village Water Department
- You may feel isolated. This is the biggest potential downside. Someone who likes rural living may call this “peaceful”; someone who likes convenience may call it “boring.”
