This home was once a dormitory for the Allegheny Male and Female Seminary of the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The Civil War caused the seminary to close. After the seminary closed, it became the ‘Cessna Hotel’. It became a primary residence after the hotel closed.

Pros of Living in Bedford, PA
Charming Historic Downtown & Vibe: Bedford boasts a vibrant, walkable downtown lined with boutique shops, local dining, art galleries, and historic brick buildings. The town hosts popular annual events, such as the Fall Foliage Festival, which draws visitors from all over the region.
Affordable Housing & Low Cost of Living: Living expenses in Bedford sit roughly 10% to 15% below state and national averages. Real estate is very accessible, with median home values floating well below national benchmarks.
Low Violent Crime Rates: Bedford enjoys a peaceful, safe atmosphere where residents benefit from a tight-knit community feel and a low incidence of violent crime.
Outdoor Recreation Access: Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, Bedford offers exceptional access to hiking, trout fishing, kayaking, and hunting. Surrounding state parks and nearby Raystown Lake offer abundant boating and outdoor sports.
Convenient Highway Access: Bedford sits right along the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) and I-99, making road trips to larger regional hubs straightforward: Altoona (~35 minutes), Johnstown (~40 minutes), and Harrisburg or Pittsburgh (~1.5 to 2 hours).
Cons of Living in Bedford, PA
Limited Job & Career Diversity: The local economy is primarily driven by tourism, healthcare, logistics/distribution, and small retail. Specialized corporate or high-tech career options are sparse locally, meaning many residents commute or work remotely.
Car Dependency for Major Amenities: While downtown is walkable for small errands, major big-box shopping centers, specialized medical facilities, and commercial entertainment require driving to nearby cities like Altoona or Cumberland, MD.
Appalachian Winters: Winters bring freezing temperatures, icy conditions, and moderate to heavy snowfall, which can make navigating winding mountain roads hazardous.
Property Crime Statistics: Relative to its small population size, per capita property crime stats (e.g., opportunistic theft or burglary) can occasionally spike higher than state averages, so basic home and vehicle security is recommended.
Slower-Paced Nightlife: Nightlife is quiet and limited to local taverns, breweries, and hotel lounges. Those seeking broad cultural nightlife or entertainment options must travel out of county.
