This cute c. 1897 handyman special, known as Conklin Cottage, in St. Joseph, Missouri, is cheap, clean and full of history.
History
According to Historic Saint Joseph Emporium, “We sometimes forget that many of the early citizens of St. Joseph were extraordinarily adventurous souls. That was true for John B. Conklin who for years was the proprietor of a lumber company on the corner of 8th and Felix here. He brought his wife Lucy to the booming city in the aftermath of the Civil War and it was in the lovely brick Italianate cottage at 1007 S. 12th Street that they raised their two daughters. John became prominent in St. Joseph society, in 1886 he ran for City Council and the Gazette Herald said of him: “J.B. Conklin will represent the whole city when he gets into the council. He is a broad gauge man.” But that broad gauge man had a fascinating history. He was born in Ohio in 1837 and when the Civil War broke out he worked in the mines in the Rocky Mountains. Even before coming to St. Joseph he worked with the Pony Express, associated with the forces at the western terminus. The lovely little brick home that he built is for sale, find out more about all the interesting people that lived there at Historic Saint Joseph Emporium.”
