Galesburg

George Washington Gale, a Presbyterian minister from New York state founded the town in 1835 with an aim to build a manual labor college (later known as Knox College). He persuaded a New York committee to purchase 17 acres, and the first settlers started to arrive in 1836 building temporary log cabins outside the town. (The committee had decided that no log cabins were to be built in town). Interesting trivia: The inventor of the Ferris wheel was born in Galesburg. The 1981 horror film Strange Behavior is set in Galesburg. The town is also mentioned in Stephen King’s book Dolores Claiborne.
