c.1896 Move-In Ready Home in Wilmerding, PA Under $50K
OHU50K NOTES
This home is one of several similar homes on Middle Avenue. Most likely they were originally homes for the workers of the extensive foundries and machine shops of the Westinghouse Air Brake Company. Move-in ready, the home is neat, clean and with natural light.
Wilmerding
George Westinghouse purchased land in the area in the late 1880s as a site for his Westinghouse Air Brake Company. He then sold the land to the East Pittsburgh Improvement Company to develop the site, which began the sale of lots in 1889.
The Westinghouse Air Brake Company General Office Building (1889–1890, rebuilt 1896), designed by Frederick J. Osterling, still stands and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you are wondering about the unusual name of the community, the town was named for Joanna Wilmerding Negley, wife of a local landowner.
