Save This Old c.1907 Illinois Fixer Upper Under $50K

I thought I recognized this fixer upper. Then I did some research and read the newspaper article about the little girl losing a toenail (see below) so I knew it was the same home. OHU50K featured it back in 2021. Apparently, it is back on the market.

History

This is the Anton L. Hoppe House. Mr. Hoppe (1866-1952) purchased the lot in 1897 from a Troy Moore for $1,225. He and his wife Sophie (1866-1934) lived here for decades with their children, Edna and Harold. Anton worked hard at several blue collar jobs and eventually paid off the mortgage well before the 1940s when he went to live with his daughter’s family.

And it looked so promising from the exterior. What some DIY-ers do to a home is a travesty. I think the home’s downfall began in the 1950s when several ads were taken out in the local newspaper renting out rooms. It appears the boarders in the 195-s and ’60s had a string of bad luck. One woman caught pneumonia, a little girl lost her big toenail when a toy box fell from a top bunk bed, a renter’s car was hit from behind at the railroad tracks, and another renter’s car burst into flames after the dome light caught on fire.
