OHU50K NOTES
Galesburg has quite an interesting history. About 496 acres of the city is part of the Galesburg Historic District. Founded in 1835 by George Washington Gale, a Presbyterian minister from New York, the city played a significant role in the US Civil War. It established the first anti-slavery society in 1837, was an Underground Railroad stop, and provided hospital care for Union soldiers. The railroad always played a big part in Galesburg’s economy, and the city was home to the Western Automobile Company, a pioneering brass era car manufacturer which produced the Gale, named for the town. I had never heard of either the Gale or of the Western Automobile Company, however, it made automobiles from 1904 to 1910. The runabouts cheaper than Ford’s Model T and were notable for its hinged bodywork that effectively made the entire body the hood.
