OHU50K NOTES
It will take someone with the means of a Richard Gere or Liam Neesen, both of whom have had a penchant for East Coast old house restorations, to bring this beauty back to life. In a lovely location, what a beauty this could be.
History
In the mid-1800s South Ryegate was a one-horse town with a church, a blacksmith shop, one store, a shopmaker’s shop and a smattering of houses. Around the time that this house was built in the 1870s, the railroad came through, and South Ryegate saw some action. Dr. John B. Darling purchased and refurbished the old lumber mill in 1867. Before Dr. Darling sold the mill to his son-in-law in 1876, the good doctor had built 14 houses in South Ryegate, this one and the one next door very likely two of them. Dr. Darling practiced medicine until his death, and although I cannot determine if this house was his residence, the original configuration would have made a great place to live and have his adjacent medical office.
