This house was built on land originally owned by Captain David Lynn. Lynn was a Revolutionary War officer and close friend of General George Washington.  After settling in Cumberland, he became one of the town’s leading citizens and largest landowners.  Thousands of acres extending from the Potomac River to Will’s Creek in the Narrows were part of his holdings. Upon receiving a patent from the State of Maryland for a tract of land on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River, he built his home in 1801, calling it “Rose Hill.” In the name of Urban Renewal, the house was sadly demolished in the 1960s to build the Interstate.
