Leroy was a motorman for the railway, and the couple had two children, Virginia and Robert Lee, in addition to caring for foster children. Originally from Indiana, Leroy earned the rank of sergeant during WWI. After retirement, the couple moved to Bradenton, Florida, and died in 1973 within two months of each other.
