Town Background

Chloride (pop. 229) is the oldest continuously inhabited  mining town in Arizona. Prospectors first found silver, gold, lead, zinc, and turquoise here in the 1840s. At its peak at the turn-of-the-century, 5,000 residents lived in Chloride.  In the late 1920s, American author Louis L’Amour lived here. During his visit the town caught fire, and he assisted the citizens in a bucket brigade that ultimately failed to stop most of the town from burning to the ground.  By 1960, Chloride was a virtual ghost town.
