This amazing c.1928 stone cottage is located on Ridge Avenue in the DeWeese Ridgecrest neighborhood of Dayton, Ohio, an area with a rich history. At the turn of the 20th century, it was rustic and rural, but was beginning to draw attention. People took the new traction trolley, which ran from downtown Dayton, to enjoy picnicking, swimming and boating at the shores of the Miami River.

It was at the Ridge Road Bridge in 1896 that Bessie Little was murdered by her boyfriend, Albert Frantz. The trial was a sensation for those times with Frantz tried and convicted at Dayton’s Court House.  Frantz ultimately died in the electric chair in 1897, and as a result, Ridge Road was nicknamed Bessie Little Road. So too, the bridge she died at became known as the “Bessie Little Bridge,” and Bessie’s ghost is said to haunt it till this day.

Two decades later, Rollin DeWeese (1870-1945) began developing what is known as the Fieldstone Plat, where our featured home is located. Each lot purchased was guaranteed to yield enough stone to build a house. And what a beautiful home this is.
