Family History

Abbott

In the 1890s, this was the home of attorney William D. Abbott (1859-1921) and his wife Lorena Mary “Rena” Adams. The couple lived in the home with their daughter, Helen.
Mr. Abbott was held in high esteem in the community. He was one of nine children of New England stock . He worked his way through college and rose in the ranks of his profession to eventually own his own firm, Abbott and Somsen.  He also was a trustee of his church for over 20 years.
His obituary was so long, that I did not print it all, but it was said of Mr. Abbott that he was a great friend, had a keen mentality and capacity for work, and was a man of outstanding merit.

Hirshfeld

After the death of William Abbott in 1921, the Hirshfield family purchased the home. Henry William Hirshfeld (1880-1943) was an assistant cashier at Merchants Bank where he was employed from 1898 until his death in 1943. Married in 1907, Henry lived in the home with his wife, Meta Olga Gruel Hirshfeld (1885-1963), daughter, Lorette, and their son, Henry G, who later became a Commander in the US Navy. After Mr. Hirshfeld’s death, Meta continued to live in the home with Lorette and Lorette’s daughter Alice until 1963.
