OHU50K NOTES
Today is Sunday, the day of the week OHU50K breaks out of our under $50K mold to feature homes up to $100K.
The tiny village of New Richmond (pop. 333) is the home of this c.1838 fixer upper known as the Washburn House . Number 201 E. Washington Street is was one of the town’s original lots. Most likely, attorney Nicholas L. Washburn (1808-1877) built a log cabin here in 1838, but no vestiges of it are still apparent.
Evidence points to the existing house being built on the lot in the 1870’s for Nicholas’ son, Dr. D.M. Washburn (1850-1941), wife Sarah Simpson and their 2 children. Sarah was a refined lady who played the square grand piano, the same piano which is still available in the home.
The gorgeous staircase is the focal point of this Italianate with Greek Revival elements. It goes all the way up to the third floor, possibly to the cupola at one time. The zebra striped flooring, popular in homes of the 1860’s-1870’s, is another amazing feature of this fabulous fixer upper.
