OHU50K NOTES
This old house was built in Greenwich, NJ (pop. 804), way back in 1840. Greenwich is in my old neck of the woods, and I can say unequivocally that it is a charming town and a wonderful place to live. Our featured little cottage sits on Ye Greate Street, the Main Street of the village, where visitors often start their walking tour of the historic old homes. For boaters, two marinas offer water access to the Cohansey River and further on to the Delaware River. This is a unique small house project for the true preservationist.
Town History
Per Wikipedia:
Greenwich Township was first formed as a precinct in 1748, and was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1798, as one of New Jersey’s initial group of 104 townships. The township was named for Greenwich, England.
In 1774, during the run-up to the American Revolutionary War, the small community on the Cohansey River was the site of the Greenwich Tea Party, in which a load of tea meant to be sent overland into Philadelphia was torched in the night. After the Revolutionary War, the pronunciation of the town was changed to Green-witch to differentiate itself from its English namesake.
