History

Inscription

Built approx. 1845 by Henry Jackson. Used as Burney’s Carriage Shop 1880-91. Restoration work was started in 1978 by Lee and Cassie Lynch assisted by Icel Burchett.

John Burney owned and operated the shop for over a decade. He married Mary Sharp in 1875, and purchased the shop five years later. The couple had 11 children, Samuel, Annie, Opal, Orlif, Lula, Clara, Arthur, Clifford, Bertha, Mattie and Ethel. I guess he could see that carriage making was on its way out, so in 1891 he left the business and bought a farm.
