This home is one of a minority of homes that survived the 1904 fire which destroyed much of central Yazoo City. According to a local legend, a witch, avenging her death, started the fire. In actually, a boy playing with matches accidentally set a house ablaze. Spreading rapidly, three-fourths of the town was destroyed, including most of the homes. It took two years for Yazoo City to recover.
