History

The Harrington House offered rooms for overnight accommodation and had a restaurant that featured “blue plate dinners.”

A 1920-era photo identifies the building as Silas Gibson’s residence. Presumably he built the two front additions when he went into the hospitality business.

Family History

Silas Gibson (1872-1955) was the owner/operator of the Harrington House, as well as resident with his wife Mabel Strout Gibson (1872-1945). Silas was born in England, came to America in 1899 and became a US citizen. He started his career as a cook in Providence, Rhode Island. The couple married in 1896, had no children, but started the Harrington House around 1915.
