Pros

  • Exceptional Affordability: The cost of living in Galesburg is roughly 5% lower than the national average.Housing is the biggest win here, with costs nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. For a single person, monthly housing costs can average as low as $723, making it one of the most accessible markets for first-time buyers and retirees.

  • Knox College Influence: The presence of Knox College (a top-tier liberal arts school) brings a level of cultural diversity, intellectual energy, and high-quality events (like the Rootabaga Jazz Festival) that you don’t typically find in towns of 30,000 people.

  • Historic “Main Street” Culture: Galesburg has done a remarkable job preserving its downtown. You’ll find thriving local boutiques, antique shops, and local favorites like Landmark Café & Creperie or Coney Island (one of the oldest restaurants in Illinois).

  • Transportation Hub: It is a major stop on the Amtrak line, offering several daily trains to Chicago. This makes it feasible to live a quiet, low-cost life in Galesburg while maintaining easy access to the big city for weekend trips or business.

  • Parks & Recreation: The city maintains impressive green spaces, most notably Lake Storey, which offers boating, fishing, and a water park.

Cons

  • Struggling Job Market: The local economy is still in a “re-building” phase after the departure of heavy industry (like Maytag). Career opportunities are largely concentrated in healthcare, education (Knox College/District 205), and logistics. Outside of these sectors, high-paying professional roles are limited.

  • High Poverty Rate: Roughly 19-20% of the population lives below the poverty line. This economic disparity is visible in certain neighborhoods and has led to a lack of funding for some public infrastructure projects and “unfinished” community developments.

  • Crime Concerns: While most of the town is quiet and safe, Galesburg has a higher-than-average crime rate for a rural city. Residents often report concerns regarding property theft and, more recently, an uptick in localized gun violence in specific areas.

  • Public School Variability: While some schools perform well, the district as a whole has faced challenges with standardized test scores and funding compared to wealthier Illinois suburbs.

  • State Tax Burden: Despite the low local cost of living, you are still subject to Illinois’ state income and high property tax rates, which can eat into the savings gained from low mortgage payments.

Family History

This residence is known as the Rev. George Washington Gale House.

In 1841, Reverend George Washington Gale (1789- 1861) —recognized as the founder of both Knox College and the city of Galesburg—built this residence and made it his home. Initially known as “Gales Grove,” the distinguished property has experienced numerous renovations and expansions over the course of its long history.

Gale lived in the house until his death in 1861, and his widow remained there for nearly a decade afterward, leaving in 1870. That year, the property was acquired by George Adams Tryon and his wife, Julia Whiting Tryon, both of whom had strong affiliations with Knox College. To better suit their growing family of four children, they expanded the home. The Tryon family retained ownership for many years, eventually selling it in the early 21st century to David and Marilyn Smith.

Architectural changes occurred over time, including the alteration of the front porches in the late 1920s, when the original Victorian design was replaced with more modest Greek Revival-style features. In the 1940s, part of the home—specifically the east side—was converted into apartment units, though it was later restored to a single-family dwelling. By the time the Smiths took residence, the house featured 15 rooms.

In 2006, the Smiths presented Knox College with the opportunity to purchase the historic home. Financial contributions from alumni Bill and Beth Suitts made it possible for the college to acquire the residence once owned by the city’s founder.
