The Pros

  • Exceptional Housing Affordability: Housing costs in Richmond run roughly 40% below the national average.Your money goes an extraordinarily long way here if you are looking for historic homes with character, large yards, or architectural details without a massive mortgage.

  • Balanced City Infrastructure: Unlike ultra-rural towns with zero amenities, Richmond features a full suite of healthcare facilities, local shopping, grocery options, parks, and a revived historic downtown area.

  • Convenient Regional Access: Sitting right along Interstate 70, Richmond gives you straightforward driving access to major metropolitan centers. You can easily drive to Dayton, Ohio (about 40 minutes) or Indianapolis (about an hour and ten minutes) for major entertainment or flights.

  • Rich Architectural Character: The city is known for its beautiful 19th-century Victorian and Edwardian neighborhoods, offering plenty of character-rich properties that fit a creative eye.

The Cons

  • Rust Belt Economic History: Like many historic Midwestern manufacturing towns, parts of Richmond have experienced economic transitions, meaning some pockets face local urban blight or slower economic growth.

  • Midwestern Winter Weather: Winters bring cold temperatures, gray skies, and regular snowfall, which will drive up heating bills and require routine winter property maintenance.

  • Limited High-End Local Job Market: While there are local jobs in healthcare, education, and light manufacturing, finding a high-paying local career is challenging, making a stable remote or hybrid professional setup vital.

  • Proximity to Larger Airports: While regional driving to Dayton or Indianapolis is easy, catching major direct commercial flights for your quarterly vacations still requires traveling to a larger airport hub a bit down the highway.

Family History

The house known as Chandlee Gables was originally constructed in 1865 by John Chandlee and his wife Esther Pittman Chandlee, then purchased and renovated into a Queen Anne Victorian in 1885 by their son Webster Chandlee. The entire family, including Webster and his wife and children, Webster’s parents, and his sister Florence, all lived together in the home. Florence, a member of the Richmond Group of Impressionist artists, was one of Earlham’s first art professors. Webster renovated the house in grand Victorian fashion to host many social events for members of the local Quaker Friends church and the Elks club.
