OHU50K NOTES

This c.1860 fixer upper is located in a quiet neighborhood, opposite a church, on a corner lot on a dead-end road.  A photo of the house with the front porch is below.

Family History

It could be that this house was the home of the Harry and Matilda McCardell family. At least the street name is the same, and there are only two houses on the street, the other much newer than this one. Matilda McCardell (married name) came to Council Grove from Maine in the early 1860s as a teenager. According to her obituary, she was one of the earliest residents of Council Grove. Her son Roy was a harness maker, until, seeing no future in that endeavor, he became a store clerk. I loved the book, “Sarah Plain and Tall,” and am wondering if Matilda was a mail-order bride.
