OHU50K NOTES

This c.1866 fixer upper was featured on OHU50K back in November 2019 before it was sold. I wonder why the home is back on the market so soon. Too much work?
Although records are scarce, local lore has it that the home was built in 1866 by A.P. Brantley, the prominent businessman of whom Brantley County was named. US Census records indicate that Nolan Cromwell Davis Sr. (1898-1976) and Myrtle Marie Newton Davis (1897-1992) lived in the house in 1920 and beyond. Nolan Sr. owned the general store in Hoboken. Apparently, he passed the store down to his son, Nolan Jr.
I found this sweet story in the Florida Times Union that has a connection to the house via Nolan Jr.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA. | When Rachel Kelly was growing up, her father Nolan Davis Jr. owned a general store in Hoboken, Ga.

He sold meat, groceries and other items that folks couldn’t do without. He gave credit to all the farmers around. They’d pay cash when they had it and settle up in the fall when the crops were all harvested and sold. And folks around Hoboken did what country people have always done: They shared things from their pastures, fields and gardens.

“We didn’t have money,” Kelly said, “but we ate well because people brought us food.”

In 1974, her father closed his store. She didn’t say why, but by then there was a lot of competition just 15 miles away in Waycross and people had cars. When Davis shut his store, there were a lot of accounts receivable so he sent out simple handwritten bills.

When he died in 2000, he was still owed thousands. Besides sending out those letters to his old customers, he hadn’t really tried to collect, Kelly said.

That’s why Kelly and her sisters, Margaret Dixon and Diane Davis, were surprised in May to get a letter and a check from Marilyn Crawford on behalf of her father, Eldon Crews.

“Daddy wanted me to send you the balance of a bill he had with your daddy,” Crawford wrote to Dixon. “He wanted you to divide it with your sisters. This will make him feel much better.”

The bill that Nolan Davis mailed to Crews on May 27, 1974, was for $391. …

Own a piece of Brantley County history!! This grand old fixer upper home was built 1866 by A.P. Brantley, the prominent business owner of whom Brantley County was named. Sellers have been told this is the oldest home in Brantley County.
This home features 92 linear feet of porch, and a attic space would double the square footage, the almost 2 acres with oak and cedar trees was a common place for the local elementary school to hold Easter egg hunts. Current sellers have made recent updates: installing a new Drain Field, tankless gas hot water heater, some wiring upgrades, hardwired smoke alarms, and new plumbing in the master bath. This home is ready for restoration.
