Family History

This is the Dr. Caleb William Edwards House. Dr. Edwards (1815-1894). He lived with his wife Eleanor Combs Edwards (1825-1909). his daughter Victoria and son Prince Albert. Apparently, the doctor was enamored of British royalty. I guess, however, he was not enamored of this son when Prince reached adulthood. Dr. Edwards virtually cut him out of the will. He left this house with its 0.75-acre lot to his wife and daughter. He left his brick store building located in town, his 360-acre farm, and two town lots to his daughter. All Prince got was one small town lot. Prince later, however, was able to purchase a lumber mill.

Location of This Indiana Fixer Upper

South Whitley, Indiana, is a small, rural town located in Whitley County, about 20 miles northwest of Fort Wayne. With its peaceful, small-town charm and proximity to larger cities, it offers a quiet lifestyle with easy access to more urban amenities. However, as with any small community, there are pros and cons depending on your personal preferences and lifestyle needs. Here’s an overview of the pros and cons of living in South Whitley:

Pros of Living in South Whitley, IN:

  1. Affordable Cost of Living:
    • South Whitley offers a very affordable cost of living, with low housing costs compared to larger cities. Whether you’re renting or buying a home, prices are generally much lower than in more urban areas, making it an attractive place for budget-conscious individuals and families.
  2. Small-Town Charm:
    • The town has a friendly, tight-knit community where people often know their neighbors. South Whitley’s rural atmosphere is appealing to those who prefer a slower pace of life and a more peaceful environment, away from the hustle and bustle of city living.
  3. Proximity to Fort Wayne:
    • South Whitley is about 20 miles from Fort Wayne, the second-largest city in Indiana. This provides residents with access to more urban amenities like shopping, dining, entertainment, medical care, and employment opportunities while still enjoying the quiet of small-town life. Fort Wayne is also home to several universities, museums, parks, and a growing cultural scene.
  4. Low Crime Rate:
    • Like many small towns, South Whitley benefits from a low crime rate. It’s generally considered a safe community, which is a big draw for families, retirees, and others looking for a secure place to live.
  5. Natural Beauty and Outdoor Recreation:
    • South Whitley and the surrounding area offer access to outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, and boating at nearby lakes and parks. The rural surroundings provide a peaceful environment for nature lovers and those who enjoy outdoor recreation.
  6. Good School System:
    • South Whitley is served by the Whitko Community School Corporation, which includes Whitko High School and other local schools. Many families appreciate the smaller class sizes and the sense of community in local schools. There may be fewer advanced programs than in larger districts, but many people find the education quality to be good for their children.
  7. Tight-Knit Community:
    • South Whitley offers a small, welcoming community where people often volunteer for local events, participate in civic activities, and know one another. Community events, such as local fairs, parades, and holiday celebrations, bring people together and foster a sense of connection.
  8. Lower Property Taxes:
    • Indiana has relatively low property taxes compared to other states, and South Whitley is no exception. This can be a benefit for homeowners looking to minimize their overall tax burden.

Cons of Living in South Whitley, IN:

  1. Limited Job Opportunities:
    • One of the primary drawbacks of living in South Whitley is the limited job market within the town itself. Most residents commute to Fort Wayne or other nearby cities for work, as South Whitley has fewer job opportunities, particularly in specialized or professional fields. The local economy is largely based on agriculture and small businesses, so career options may be more limited than in larger urban areas.
  2. Limited Amenities and Entertainment Options:
    • While South Whitley offers some basic amenities like local shops, a post office, and small-town dining, there are limited entertainment options. If you enjoy a wide variety of dining, shopping, cultural events, or nightlife, you’ll need to travel to Fort Wayne for these activities. This could be a downside for those used to the variety and vibrancy of city life.
  3. Public Transportation:
    • South Whitley does not have a public transportation system. A personal vehicle is necessary for getting around, running errands, and commuting to nearby towns or cities. For those who prefer not to drive or don’t own a car, this could be a significant inconvenience.
  4. Limited Healthcare Facilities:
    • South Whitley has a small local healthcare facility, but for more specialized care, residents may need to travel to Fort Wayne or other larger cities. While basic medical services are available, more serious or specialized medical needs may require longer trips to urban centers.
  5. Weather Extremes:
    • Like much of Indiana, South Whitley experiences all four seasons, including hot summers, cold winters, and potential for severe weather such as snowstorms and thunderstorms. The winter months can be especially challenging for those who are not accustomed to snow and ice, as the town’s rural roads may not always be cleared quickly during heavy snowfalls.
  6. Limited Retail and Dining Options:
    • South Whitley has a small number of retail stores, but it’s not a shopping hub. For those who enjoy having access to a wide range of retail stores, restaurants, and entertainment, they will likely need to travel to Fort Wayne. While the town has some local eateries and shops, they may not offer the same variety as in larger cities.
  7. Isolation:
    • South Whitley’s rural location can feel somewhat isolated for those who are used to being close to urban centers. While Fort Wayne is nearby, the town itself has a relatively small population, and there may be limited social or cultural opportunities for people looking for more urban experiences.
  8. Aging Infrastructure:
    • Like many small towns, some of the infrastructure in South Whitley may be aging, including roads, public buildings, and utilities. While the town is generally well-maintained, there could be occasional challenges with infrastructure upkeep compared to newer developments in more urban areas.

Summary:

South Whitley, Indiana, offers a quiet, rural lifestyle with an affordable cost of living and easy access to nearby Fort Wayne. The town is known for its friendly community, low crime rate, and scenic surroundings, making it an attractive option for those seeking a peaceful place to live. However, the town does have limited job opportunities, amenities, and entertainment options, and residents may need to travel for healthcare or more specialized needs. It’s an ideal location for people who enjoy a slower pace of life, a tight-knit community, and proximity to larger cities but may not be suitable for those who want more urban conveniences or job options right in town.
