c.1870 Historic Fixer Upper in Demopolis AL $85K ~Sold – Read New Owner Update

$85,000 ~ Sold

UPDATE:

Received word from the new owner of this fabulous house. She purchased the house in March of 2021 and painted and updated the exterior and the interior. She now has a full functioning kitchen with wall to wall cabinets with all new appliances, and she removed the old flooring in the kitchen. All the hardwood floors were polished throughout the house. The interior rooms have all been painted Edgecomb grey with white trim. The exterior of the house is Chipendale Rose Tone and white (pink and white). She trimmed all the trees and pressure washed all the sidewalks.

We were glad to hear that she was able to purchase the house for way less than the listing price and found the process of redoing this house not very expensive. She did the majority of the work herself, but hired out the plumbing to a local company. A local contractor did the electrical work for the updated kitchen. She painted the outside herself except for the high up gables and above the porch. Same local contractor did the high up gables and above the porch.

She states, “I love how everything turned out. It is bittersweet to not have as many project left to do. Then again they say the only thing that works in an old house is the owner.”

OHU50K Notes

This wonderful fixer upper is known as the Meyer House. Built in 1890, it is part of the Demopolis Historic District, a 494 collection of homes and other structures built between 1820 and 1963.

The two-story frame Queen Anne has a pressed metal shingle hipped roof with cross gables and a 3-bay facade. Imbricated shingles decorate all the gable ends with a face band between levels. The windows in the bay are one-over-one, double hung, and the second story level has casement windows.

The home offers sun porches on the north and south sides. The Craftsman style replacement porch has brick pillars and apron walls. In addition, the three interior chimneys have corbelled and decorative chimney pots.

Family History

Old homes are usually named for the first owners or the family that lived there for the longest period of time. I couldn’t determine which Meyer family lived at 300 S. Main. Many German immigrants of the same name have lived in Demopolis.

I did discover, however, that the Stern family lived here in from the 1920s at least through the 1940s, perhaps longer. Henry A. Stern (1888-1967), a German Jewish immigrant, came to America  in 1909. He owned a dry goods store in town. (A Meyers family owned a dry goods store at the turn of the century, so perhaps Stern purchased the store and house from them?)

Henry lived in the house with his wife Bessie, parents Max and Lena, and children Henry Jr., Morris, Max, Mary, Walter, Bessie and Otto. Henry Jr. was working as a salesman in the store as young as age 14. The family home was worth $13,000 in 1930.

Absolutely stunning home. What a beautiful staircase. This house makes me wish that I could sell mine, pack up, and move. Someone will be very lucky.
