Family History

This home was originally built for built for and by Samuel Eldridge (1833-1913), a carpenter who managed and later owned the town’s sash and door plant along with his older brother Benjamin. Benjamin owned a larger home across the street. Samuel was married twice and had a daughter, Bertha, with this second wife. Bertha was born at the home in 1877. She and her brother Harold are shown in the picture below along with her mother Ellen. In 1905, Bertha married Fred O. Herrick in 1905, and they raised their son, Samuel, here while Fred ran the factory.

After the Herricks, Dennis and Dorothy Cleaves owned the home. Dennis owned many businesses, including a grocery story, Chevrolet dealership, Clark’s Mobile Home Sales and Clark’s Furniture Company. He wintered in Florida and died in 200.
