Family History

This was the home of Leopold Fessler (1836-1920). He came to America from Germany with his family when he was 18. He served in the Union Army during the US Civil War and married Isabella “Belle” Garten in 1873. The couple purchased our featured home in 1877, which they owned free and clear.  They raised their six children there; Lulu, Jessie, Frank, Stella, Arthur and Carl.
It was difficult finding out what Leopold did for a living that would make the salary to afford such a prestigious home. In his early years he was a baker and a day laborer. Later in life, the US Census lists him having “his own income.”  In any event, his obituary states that he was “a well known and highly esteemed resident of Newton.” He died in the home and the funeral was held there.
